Rounding up my latest finds + reads of the past week
This past week has been tough. It’s definitely hard to process what we witnessed on Wednesday. Domestic terrorists attacked the Capitol and our democracy. And what’s even scarier is that I’m not at all surprised. These past four years have been leading up to this moment and this was 100% brought on by Donald Trump.
The attack and attempted coup is ALSO such a race issue. As we watched hundreds of white supremist walk + fight their way into the Capitol, we got to witness the epitome of what white privilege is. If those group of people where Muslim, Black or brown – more people would have been dead, tear gassed or arrested. There would’ve been way more push back and violence from the police.
What’s INSANE is that of all of this planning what done out in the open online, so why didn’t our intelligent departments or the police action on this? Or at the very least, come fully prepared to protect the Capital come Wednesday? I have so many questions and I’m sure you do too. So for this LD Round Up, I pulled together helpful articles and people to follow who are putting out extremely thought + helpful information.
Latonya Yvette wrote an incredible personal piece on what white supremacists look like and how we uphold white supremacy, a lot.
Outside of the systemic racism + lack of police protection, this article explains the design history of Washington (lots of “openness”). And it specifically talks about why the Capitol was so easy to break in to.
As always the The Daily podcast captures the details and frightening reality of Wednesday. Definitely listen to both of their recent episodes: An Assault on the Capitol + How They Stormed Congress.
If you’re looking for quick + resourceful information via Instagram, you should follow @jessicayellin (former CNN Chief White House Correspondent) + @emilyinyourphone (former counsel of the Senate) – thanks to Jess Kirby for this find!
These Black Capitol police officers share their horrific experience in trying to protect the Capitol against the domestic terrorists.
Ty to hang in there this upcoming week. Stay informed and do what you need to do to take breaks.
xx Christine
