A couple of weeks ago, I spent the weekend in Martha’s Vineyard and wished I could’ve stayed longer. It was a great time filled with fresh seafood, wine and windy beach days.
Alex and I left work early on Friday (yay for Summer Fridays!) and took the 3:45PM ferry from Woods Hole. It was an easy 45 minute ferry ride and boom….we were on Island time. We met the rest of my family there and laid low on Friday night with a home cooked meal, a nice glass of rose and a sunset walk to the beach.
Saturday morning started off a bit rainy and overcast, so we slowly got ready in the morning and planned our activities for the the day. It started with bike rides to the downtown area to check out local shops. I never realized how big the Vineyard was until I found out there are 6 towns that make up the island! We stayed in Vineyard Haven, which was a nice change in scenery since I’ve only stayed in Edgartown.
Downtown Vineyard Haven is filled with quintessential New England capes, cute boutiques, plus a food scene. I walked into Bespoke Abode and loved everything in there. The store is an interior design service studio but also offers unique pieces customer can buy as they walk in. It was a wonderful combination of unique rustic pieces with a clean and neutral tone.
Later that day, the sky cleared up and we went off on an adventure to the West side of the Island to Aquinnah. This part of the Island has breath taking views of the ocean and is famously known as the Vineyard’s version of Cliffs of Moher.
Sunday was the perfect beach day and naturally, it was the day we had to leave. We woke up early and got to the beach by 10AM to get a good few hours in the sun. We went to South Beach on the East side of the Island and it was the right move. It was about a 20 minute drive from VH but totally worth it. The beach had perfect waves for body surfing and you can get a nice view of biplane’s taking off (if you’re lucky, they’ll put on a show). Right up the road from the beach is where you can pay to ride in ones of these planes. If you aren’t afraid of heights, you should totally do it!
As sad as it was to leave on the 5PM ferry home, we were so glad we made the trip even if it was just for the weekend. I haven’t properly been to the beach and felt like I was on vacation, so it was the perfect getaway before Summer comes to an end.
