“For anyone who lives in the oak-and-maple area of New England, there is a perennial temptation to plunge into a purple sea of adjectives about October.”
— Hal Borland
Over this past weekend, Alex and I had a classic New England fall day trip. We visited Salem + Marblehead, MA to explore and get in the Halloween mood (as if we need another reason). Plus, we love driving around coastal towns to gather ideas of what we want our future home to look like.
If you live in the New England area, I recommend not going to Salem during October because there was a ton of people! And this is during COVID. Luckily, masks were required at all times and everyone abided by the rules, phew. But if you don’t like crowds, I recommend going in September or after Halloween. I visited Salem last year in December and it was a ghost town (no pun intended).
If you do end up visiting, definitely check out Jaho Coffee + Wine Bar and order yourself a breakfast sandwich. When we ate there, it was the perfect quick lunch with plenty of outside seating. Plus we enjoyed a fall beer with our sandwiches to take the edge off of from a day of walking. Another place to visit, is a highly recommended home goods store, Oak + Moss . If you’re a plant lover, this is your place.
After a few hours spent in Salem, we visited Marblehead. It’s another historic coastal town located on the North Shore of Boston. It’s an old fishing town, so we drove through in awe of the historic 17th century-buildings + homes. We fell in love with colorful, narrow streets and didn’t spend nearly enough time in this town . We will be back!
