It’s been almost a year since I did my last true clean beauty update. And during that year, I’ve been slowly transitioning my hair care, skin care and makeup to cleaner less toxic products. I’ve taken my time because clean beauty is expensive (but rightfully so!) I’ve rounded up my favorites that I’ve been loving and go over what’s been working and what hasn’t. Here we go!
HAIR CARE
Rahua Dry Shampoo – I’ve bee using Rahua’s Dry Shampoo for the past 2 months and can say it works really well. As someone who only washes their hair once a week, dry shampoo is my best friend. The powder mixes in with my hair nicely and doesn’t look ashy at all. From what I’ve read on reviews, it works on all hair types, even darker hair color. It contains fuller’s earth clay to help scalp health and star anise which encourages hair regrowth.
SKINCARE
Ursa Major Face Wash, Toner & Lotion – I love all three of these products and am glad I recently made the switch. My skin has cleared up and looked fresher than it has in months. I’ve had terrible skin since the Fall and haven’t been able to shake it.The Face Wash and Toner have a light fresh mint scent and truly makes my face feel clean and refreshed after I use them. The face wash contains Aloe Vera leaf juice which heals redness and flakiness and I can attest that it’s working. The toner contains white willow extract, which is a powerful anti-inflammatory and is often used as an aspirin substitute. The lotion is the right amount of moisture without making my face feel too oily but keeps my face from flaking off. I use the lotion both at night and in the morning before I put makeup on. It contains neroli oil which keep the skin glowing and smooth.
Ursa Major Daily Defense Lotion – I’ve been using this lotion for almost a year now. I will say that when I first started to use it, I didn’t enjoy it at first. I tried using it as a my moisturizer and sunscreen and my face felt too dry. This lotion does great with another base layer of either lotion or oil. It contains zinc, which non-nano zinc oxide provides the skin with a powerful shield against UV rays.
French Girl Lip Polish– Again, I’ve been using this lip scrub for almost a year and wrote about it in this post last summer. I’ve had it since last June and still have quite a bit of it left. It’s at a great price point and last for a long time!
French Girl Lumiere Body Oil Bronzing – I recently bought this oil to help add some color and moisture to my pale skin. I wouldn’t say it makes me look “tan” but it helps give my skin a glow and shimmer to it! Not to mention it moisturizes really nicely.
MAKEUP
RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up – This is by far my favorite purchase. It gives you great coverage without feeling like you have pounds of makeup on and settles into your skin nicely throughout the day. It gives you that “no makeup makeup” look everyone loves. I’ve started to barely use my foundation and use the “Un” Cover -Up instead and am loving it. It contains coconut oil which encourages healthy cell turnover, hydrates and heals the skin.
Well People Mascara – It’s tough finding non-toxic mascara that actually works … but Well People’s mascara does the job. It doesn’t clump at all and the mascara lifts my lashes in a very natural way. I will say that if I was going to a fancy event and wanted a more dramatic look, I don’t think I’ll get that with this mascara. It also contains beeswax which conditions, calms and soothes and softens the skin and lashes.
Ilia Multi-Stick – I mostly use this product for the blush put it looks nice on lips as well. I like a dewy natural look and this color and texture works great together. The blush will fade as the day goes on (& I touch my face a lot) but still keeps a slight color on the cheek. The stick contains coco butter which is great for naturally healing dry sensitive skin.
I’m pretty happy with my current clean beauty and skincare and have finally gotten to a good place with products that I like and work for me. Everyone’s skin is different so unfortunately, it might take some trial and error until you find what’s right for you. I really wanted to try oils and use that as my main moisturizer and it just DIDN’T work. Some oils made me completely break out in a rash and some made my face to oily and greasy. This happened to me with other products on numerous occasions and it was and can still be really frustrating. However, I know I’m making the right transition to clean toxic-free ingredients and is good for my body – that makes all of the difference.
I can honestly say Follain has been a big part in my transition to clean beauty and have been SOOO helpful. I buy majority of my beauty and skin care through them and it’s a great experience. They are based out of Boston but their online shop is just as great and informational. Plus they are expanding quite a bit and are opening stores around the country!
I can only speak highly of using clean beauty and skincare so if you are on the fence – you should make the move!
